Supporting MHD to set sustainable development KPIs
Category: Research and Analysis
Keyword: KPI analysis
Year: 2023
Client: MHD Moët Hennessy Diageo K.K.https://www.mhdkk.com/en/company/csr/
MHD Moët Hennessy Diageo K.K. (MHD) is a part of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton Grope headquartered in Paris, and sells and markets imported luxury liquors.
Background
Advancing sustainability efforts
The client, MHD, was looking to examine and set KPIs for sustainable management as well as major social issues in Japan in order to advance sustainability efforts in Japan.
MHD had been promoting responsible drinking and working on social contribution projects in Japan for some time. At the time they were taking a new step forward to establish environmental indicators to work on in the office in Japan and address new social issues.
Approach
Aligning with the Group’s global policy
Our first task was benchmarking trends of international liquor producers and sellers. We then summarized the expectation for the company in Japan, and proposed KPIs for sustainable development related to the environment and initiatives for major social issues in Japan.
Two years later from our proposal, in 2021, we received a new request. This time they were looking to reinforce their efforts upon announcement of their global sustainability policy “2030 Ambition” and establishment of quantitative reduction goals in the environment area.
MHD has set one of their global goals as reducing its CO2 impact (Scope 1, 2 and 3) by 50% by 2030 compared to 2019. In order to help them pursue the goal as part of the Group, we at EcoNetworks proposed strategies for emissions reduction based on the current status of CO2 emission and waste management. We also made presentation about the strategies to senior management at the MHD’s meeting.
Outcome
Sustainability at international company in Japan
The new KPIs have been implemented by MHD. Going forward, we at EcoNetworks will continue to support the cross-sectional project team that works on the reduction of the environment impact.
It is important for Japan office of the global company to work on the initiatives that match the actual conditions in Japan, while aligning their efforts with the policy of the headquarters. We support our clients to take initiatives that consistent with the global trends, and at the same time address Japan-specific issues.

Analysis of circular business models in mobility
Category: Research and Analysis
Keyword: Long- or mid-term planning
Year: 2021
Client: A global manufacturerBackground
Circular economy is key to decarbonization
In Japan and around the world, transitions to decarbonized societies for the year 2050 are accelerating. For businesses, how to advance decarbonization of their products and services is an urgent matter. One of the keys to achieving this is to shift towards circular business models, which are expected to create synergies between carbon emission reduction and circular business transformation. Taking steps to implement the circular economy concept can also lead to increasing the competitiveness of a company.
The client requested us to consult on how they can start to adopt circular economy principles into their business.
Our Approach
Researching on leading examples in mobility industries outside Japan
We first collected information on products and services that integrate the ideas of circular economy among mobility industries outside Japan. We compiled more than 20 such examples from diverse regions including Europe, the US, Asia and Africa. By analyzing them based on our analysis framework, we studied the cases from the perspectives of value creation and business model construction.
Outcome
Extracting insights from diverse examples to reflect them on the client’s business framework
It is useful to examine leading examples in other countries when adopting the principles of circular economy to your own business development and sales strategies.

Global stakeholder survey
Category: Research and Analysis
Keyword: Stakeholder research & surveys、CSR reports / Sustainability report
Year: 2017
Client: A global manufacturerIdentifying key stakeholders and engaging with them through meeting, dialogue, or questionnaires allows a corporation to clarify the social issues it should address as top priorities and potential risks to its business.
EcoNetworks conducted a survey for a global manufacturer to solicit the opinions of a variety of stakeholders worldwide.
Targeted stakeholders included consumers, civil society organizations, researchers, government officials, investors, and suppliers with a high interest in social issues and knowledge about CSR. Leveraging our broad network, we took into account a balance of social status and age, as well as location in Europe, the US, and Asia, where the company operates, to find respondents. This helped bring out differences in the interest and focus that people with different backgrounds have.
In the questionnaire, we requested that respondents read the company’s latest CSR report, and asked for feedback about its current priority issues, activities, and future outlook. The results in our summary clearly show what types of issues and activities stakeholders see as important and expect the company to address. This provided valuable input for the company to consider their CSR initiatives going forward.

Year: 2017
Client: An energy companyDeveloping sustainability strategies and KPIs in light of industry best practices ― EcoNetworks is here to accommodate such a request for corporations that seek quick and effective benchmarking.
In this project, we supported an energy company in collecting 30 companies’ cases worldwide.
The major dimensions we examined were how benchmark companies plotted sustainability strategies, clarified priority issues, set boundaries, determined KPIs, and disclosed their management approach. Trends observed through benchmarking were analyzed and compiled in a report, which provided useful insights for the company.
