Supporting a manufacturer’s field research on the latest trends in sustainability
Background
Manufacturer keen to visit sites in person and gain insights
“We want to visit sites in person to gain insights into future-oriented projects on the circular economy and other themes and learn about the latest trends in Japan and overseas.”
A manufacturing company recently consulted with us about conducting field research on multiple topics related to a sustainable society. We at EcoNetworks supported the selection of entities in the field research and coordinated the visits.
Approach
Research leveraging our broad network and coordination that builds trust
The entities considered for this field research were companies and organizations active in Japan, Europe, and the United States. We picked out multiple candidates and narrowed down the number of sites to be visited, keeping in mind the interests of the client. Throughout this process, we emphasized leveraging our network.
Researchers living in different regions, such as Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States, spearheaded this approach while attending relevant events held locally to gather information. Based on local perspectives and overall trends in sustainability, they selected approximately 40 candidates.
In addition, when coordinating the visits, it was imperative to first ensure that each organization correctly understood the purpose of the visits and that we gained their trust, especially because their interest and experience in hosting visits could vary. We made every effort to communicate clearly by explaining why the client wanted to make a visit and what activities or technologies they are interested in. We also arranged phone or online meetings as needed to ensure thorough communication.
Outcome
Potential for new innovations from visits in each region
Ultimately, more than 20 organizations in five countries were visited.
We received some positive feedback from the person in charge of the field research at the client company. They said the selection of entities based on the themes and local conditions and our close communication with the hosts before the visits were very successful. We will continue to provide support next fiscal year as well.
We hope new innovations that help shape a sustainable society will emerge as a direct result of the visits conducted in each region.
