I have great news for people looking to rent a apartment in Tokyo.
Apartment located in Adachi-ku, Tokyo, is now leasing apartment with a special feature called "2DKG" eco-apartment.
Everyone knows what D (dining) and K(kitchen) stands for, but what is "G"?
G is stands for "Garden".
So, this apartment has special feature that garden is "connected" to the kitchen.
And garden is visible from the kitchen where it makes residents wonder "umm, what should we have for dinner today?".

I would love to see neighboring country like Russia get into sustainable alcohol business!

Shade Event Green

先日、ジャッキー･チェンが中国の環境保護活動に貢献した民間人を
選ぶイベントに委員として出席したという記事を耳にしました。
中国といえば、2008年に北京でオリンピックが、
2010年に上海で万博が開催されますよね。
北京オリンピックのテーマの１つが「緑色五輪」。
「緑色」とは中国語で、エコロジーや環境という意味です。
大気汚染改善のため、車のナンバープレートの奇数偶数で
車の走行可能日を決め、交通量を規制する実験をしたり、
イタリア政府と協力して選手村の熱供給を
ソーラーで行うことを目指したり、
地下に埋められた川の復元をしたりと、
1年後の開催に向けて色々と取り組んでいるみたいです。
2006年のドイツW杯では「グリーンゴール」
同年の愛・地球博のテーマは「地球の叡智」
北京五輪の「緑色五輪」
サステイナブル・フェス「ライブアース」
昨日行われた野球のヤクルト対ジャイアンツ戦も「エコナイター」でした。
大きなイベントで「環境」が１つのキーワードになっていますね。
イベント「総グリーン化」ムーブメントもそこまで来ている気がします。

On the news, I heard about Jackie Chan attending to an event of choosing a candidate that will be
responsible for environmental protection in China.
Why all the sudden movie actor like Jackie Chan stepping forward to act on environmental issues?
China will be holding 2 big international events in coming years.
"Beijing 2008 Olympics" and "Shanghai 2010 World Expo".
Big events in the past has statistically shown that waste is one of the big concerns.
One of the theme of Beijing Olympics is "Green Olympics".
Beijing has already started to act upon green practice for the event.
1. Beijing city have tried the car reduction plan by banning cars on alternate days using an 'odds and evens' number plate system.
2.From the support of Italian government, solar energy system has been introduced to provide energy in athlete's village.
3.The restoration of river buried underground has been done.
These are some of past and coming events related to Green Events.
"Green Goal" is a priory theme of FIFA World Cup 2006 Germany.
"Nature's Wisdom" is a main idea of EXPO 2005 Aichi Japan.
"Green Olympics" of next Beijing 2008 Olympics.
"Live Earth" was also held 2 months ago.
There was a "Eco Night Game" in NPB baseball match last week.
Globally big events are starting to care about the environment.
It might be time to initiate a "Shade All Event Green" movement.

Adaptive Architecture

周りの環境に「適応」する住宅～Adaptable Building～
「土地倫理（land ethics）」という概念を提起したことで有名なアルド・レオポルドの言葉に「土地は生命体である」というものがあります。この150年間、人類は石油の力を使うことで、急激な経済成長を経験しました。ところが、環境より経済優先のシステムを続けていくなかで、見えない所で多くの生態系が破壊され、様々な地球温暖化の悪影響を受けるようになってきています。最近になってようやく、多くの人が気付き始めたのではないでしょうか？「この生きた方ではいけない、今の考え方を変えなければ」と。
何かを変えること、今までの物を捨てることはなかなか難しい。でも、人間って新しい環境に適応しやすい生き物だと思うのです。ダーウィンも、生き物は環境に適応していかなければ絶滅すると言っています。
サステナブル社会という時代に、かっこよく適応していきましょうよ。
ところで私、最近「Adaptable Architecture」に興味があり、色々と勉強をしております。
Green Buildingとは、太陽などのエネルギーを使い、限られた資源で低エネルギーな建物を作ることを言います。一方、このAdaptable Architectureとは季節や天候などその場その場の環境に「適応」する建物のこと。

Adaptable Architecture
We all know what Aldo Leopold desired from reading his famous work,“Land Ethics”. We have been poor student of Professor Leopold for past 150 years. But there are always creators around the world trying to break the barriers of modern human integrity.
I have recently encountered with “adaptable architecture design”. Yes, like all living things, buildings must adapt with a land to fulfill its function. Green Building has focus and goal of constructing in limited resource, distributing less energy, and using nature (such as sunlight) as a tool to fulfill energy requirement of the building. What is so cool about this adaptive building is that, building changes its formation by season, weather, and whatever is needed for building to function in the way of sustainability. Building will change its formation by how nature acts and gain something out of it. Isn't it nice?

China × Sustainability

中国 × サステナビリティ
数ヶ月前、私は中国を1ヶ月弱旅をした。
その時に感じた、中国での「サステナビリティ」について語りたいと思う。
禿げた山々。
駅で寝泊りしている地方からの出稼ぎ労働者たち。
電車の窓からゴミを投げる人々。
オリンピックのために古い町並みが壊されていく北京市。
はっきりいって、サステナブルなものを感じることはほとんどできなかった。
ところで、この写真 （日本語記の終わり）
中国の庶民食堂で出てきたお粥だが、
器の底にはプラスチックの袋が敷かれている。
これはもしかしたら、洗う際に水を汚さないためにしているといえるかもしれない。
しかし実際には、単に洗う手間をはぶくためである。
一般の人たちにとっては日々の生活が第一である。
世界のこと、未来のことまで考えることはまず難しい。
だからもし、LOHASやファッショナブルなイメージでなど、
日本でサステナビリティの概念を広めたのと同じ方法で
中国で広めようと思っても、きっと失敗するであろう。
サステナビリティの概念を広めるにあたっては、
まず、そこにいる人たちがどのような生活をしているかを観察し、価値観や考え方を知ること。
次に、その人たちに最も適した方法で広めていくこと。
画一的なやり方を押し付けることには意味がないということを、
今回の中国の旅を通して学んだ。
China × Sustainability
Few months ago, I had a chance to visit China for almost a month.
So I'd like to tell you what I felt there about sustainability in China.
Mountains are deforested.
Rural migrants sleep at the station.
People throw trashes outside from the train.
Beijing city destroyed old streets to get ready for Olympic construction.
I hardly had a chance to feel something "sustainable".

The dish on the right is one of typical Chinese food called rice porridge, served in a restaurant for ordinary people.
As you see, a plastic bag wraps the plate.
We might say this is done in order not to pollute water when washing.
But the fact is that because it's easy to clean the plate.
For them, their daily life is the most important.
They don't care of thinking something global or something in the future.
There will be no chance for China to develop sustainable mind similar ways as in Japan, using LOHAS (Life of Health and Sustainability) tactics or sustainability as a fashion.
The best way to promote the idea of sustainability is to:
1. First, look carefully how people live and know their values and ways of thinking.
Then, try to spread the idea where people have better chance adapting to.
Unilateral, aggressive way has no point.
That is what I've learned in my trip to China.

New Green Crayon Staff "Takeshi Nozawa"
皆さん、こんにちは。
エコネットワークスのスタッフとして、
新しくこの「Green Crayon」ブログに参加することになりました。
野澤健（のざわたけし）と申します。
まず初めに、少し自己紹介を。
私は1984年10月1日、愛知県の新城市という田舎の町で生まれました。
その後大学に通うために上京し、
1年ほど前に、エコネットワークという組織に出会いました。
私は8歳のとき、親の仕事の関係で家族でフランスに移住し、
4年間ほどあちらに住んでいました。
フランスでは日本と違って、陸続きで他の国に簡単に行くことができ、
大人も子どもも十分な休みがあるので、
休みの度に色々な国に旅行に行っていました。
違った文化に出会い、違った人々の生き方に出会う。
世の中には色々な人たちがいるということを
小さな時に実感できたことは、
今の私に大きな影響を与えています。
サステナブルな社会を実現していくためにも、この考え方は大事です。
1人1人が違うように、「サステナビリティ」の定義は人によって違うはずです。
それを、「これがサステナビリティだ」
「このように日々の生活をサステナブルに変えなくてはいけない」
と他の人に押しつけることはよくありません。
でも、人々がサステナブルな生活に移行することを求められていることは確かです。
そこで、みなさんがサステナブルな生活を創っていくための、
今までとは違った新しい選択肢をこの"Green Crayon"を通して
伝えていくことができればと思います。
それぞれが「マイ・サステナビリティ」をみつける
お手伝いができれば嬉しいです。

Hello everyone,
My name is Takeshi Nozawa, currently part time staff from EcoNetworks.
I will be one of the staff updating topics in this exciting blog! I'm really happy and excited to join this "Green Crayon" blog,
First, let me introduce little bit about myself.
I was born in 1st October 1984, in Shinshiro City, a small town of Aichi Prefecture (located almost center of Japan).
I have approached my way up to Tokyo to attend a Tokyo University. At this time I am currently senior student majoring in study Foreign Studies (TUFS). I have one more year to graduate, and it is good chance for me to join EcoNetworks after the graduation.
My background:
When I was 8 years old, my family moved to France for 4 years. Compared to Japan, France is one of the countries that you can easily go to other countries because Europe is compacted together. I was able to meet people from different culture and get in touch with their lifestyle. So I got many chances to see and experience different cultures and lifestyles.
These experiences affect a lot on me.
I think knowing and understanding the difference and similarity that are different from your background is really important. We must understand and realize to value each culture, so our mind will respect the good of different and approach the path to sustainable society.
As each individual is different, everyone has its own idea about sustainability.
It is not good idea to force someone to teach what is sustainable. It is also not very nice to force them to change their daily life to your way of sustainable lifestyle.
But it is clear that each individual must act their own way of sustainability to push society as a whole to reach “sustainablility”.
So I want to inform the alternative sustainable choices through this "Green Crayon" and hoping to tip you to create your own way of new sustainable life.
It is my pleasure to support you to seek your "Sustainability".
