忘れられないあの曲。音楽は思い出を語るといいますよね。
私は、渡米したばかりの頃、アメリカの音楽シーンに圧倒されました。80年代といえば、
音楽色がとても明るく、元気でもある時代だったからかもしれません。 音楽からさびしさを学び、勇気をもらい、元気になることも感動することも学びました。
1989年、「ミッドナイト・オイル」という衝撃的なバンドとめぐり合いました。
大きな月をバックに奇妙な動きをするボーカル、10歳の私に音楽のすばらしさを教えてくれた一つの極です。スキンヘッドのボーカル（ピーター・ギャレット）のソウルフルな叫びに、体が勝手に動いてしまうビート・アンド・リズム。 「ベッズ・アー・バーニング」という名曲が、私が愛用している、ITUNEラジオからタイムスリップをし、流れてきました。。。感動のあまり、すぐに中古レコード屋に探しに行き、購入。19年前に感動した曲と又再開できるすばらさしさに感謝。私は古い過去を思い出しながら、音楽を聴き始める。2，3回聴いた後、面白いことにきづく。 聞いていると、このバンド、環境問題、社会問題を細かく、語っているじゃないか！
ミッドナイト・オイルは19７0年から2002年まで活動をしていたオーストラリア出身のバンド。政治的能動主義でも有名である、核廃絶や土着の土地権利、民族集団の和解など多くの環境活動にも関わっている。1989年にはボーカルのピーター・ギャレットはオーストラリア環境保全基金の代表と選ばれる。ミッドナイト・オイルの有名な活動の一例は、ニューヨーク市にあるエクソン・モービル本社の前でプロテスト・コンサートを行ったこと。

In my early childhood, I have encountered to great music. Music has given me a magical tool to mellow out in Sunday Afternoon and ignite my spirit on nights with overflowing Chemistry homework that I had to do in College days.
I remember on the year 1989, "Midnight Oil” gave me that kind of positive force..
One of their famous song "Beds are Burning" had greatest sound of all time. I used to dance to this music at age of 10. I had recorded them on my tape from the radio station, and would listen to it many times.
About two years ago, I was listening to the radio and Midnight Oil came on. And I realized the beat, and once again like childhood days, the riff would never get out of my head. So, I went to the record store (midnight oil is not available in Itune Japan) and purchased the album.
I would listen to it many times....
And if you hear the lyrics closely, I found out what song actually meant.
What I like about this song is that when it reaches at end of the song, you will hear clock ticking. This song is giving us the sign that our time is almost up. We must face the fact that we are not living in sustainable matter and we must find the ways to solve environmental problems, we must “pay the rent”.

Midnight Oil is Australian band that was active through the 1970(earthday formed)to 2002. Their song focuses on political activism ranging from nuclear disarmament to indigenous land rights, reconciliation, and environmental issues. In 1989,vocal Peter Garrett was appointed as President of Australian Conservation Foundation. One of the famous act from Midnight Oil was playing front of Exxon Head-quarters in New York. They played the protested over Exxon Valdez oil spill, with banner reading “midnight oil makes you dance, Exxon Oil makes you sick”. Peter Garrett left the band in 2002 to focus on his political career.
