GOT WATER?

暑い季節が近づいてきましたね-。
いきなりですが、以前、体の調子が悪くした時期がありました。その大きな原因が「水分不足」。
若いとき、私は水分をあまり飲まず、運動を5時間ー8時間を休憩なしに続けていた時期がありました。
自己管理がまったく出来ていなく、不健康な日々を少した結果が体調がわるくなったきっかけだとおもいます。最近は、水だけでも1リットル以上飲む事を心がけています。3，4年前からマイボトルも持ち歩きはじめ、サステナブルな生活を心がけようとしております。ちょうど1年半前、日本に帰国したとき「マイボトル休み」にはいってしまい、マイボトルを使わなかった事を今や反省した上、いまや積極的に使わせていただいてます！
今年も期待してます！マイボトル達よ！ 皆さんはどのようなマイ・ボトルを持っていますか？
私がマイボトルをジムに頻繁に持ち運ぶ姿を見た人達が、「それいいねー、どこで買ったの？」と興味ぶかく話しかけてくれました、いまや彼、彼女らもマイボトル仲間になりましたー。
米国の学生たちはステッカーをはりまくって、おしゃれな人もいれば、適当にはっている人もいますよ！

From climatologist, summer in Japan is going to get pretty nasty.
Got your water bottles with full of ice packed ready?
Since, I drink alot of water daily, having my own water bottle is sure necessary act to reduce daily waste. I have been user of my water bottle for quite a long time, and I cannot think of not carrying my bottle around with me when I am out of my house. Since, I was in the environment where most residents have strong will act upon sustainable lifestyle, habit of carrying your water bottle became natural and somewhat routine .
I remember in college days, I did a research about how much water I drink per day, and organize them into Excel data. From what I can remeber, I drink about approx. two water bottles (Plastic water bottles) per day, and within a month, I will be making 60 water bottles of waste, and in a year I would waste 720 water bottles......and on and on
wow, don't even want to think about counting them in population wise.
So, can you share with us, what kind of unique water bottle that you have!?
Of course, number one recommendation is purchasing Nalgene water bottle!

Organic T
もうすぐ夏ですね,夏服をクローゼットの奥から取り出し、「え、こんな服持ってたっけ？」と思ってしまうこともありません？
そして、夏といえば、「Tシャツ！」
私はかなりのTシャツ好きで、今でも高校生のときのTシャツを大事に着ています。

先月、サンフランシスコに仕事で行った際、ダウンタウンにある立派な「リーバイス・ストア」をたまたま見かけたので入ってみると、店内にある「リーバイス・エコ」のコーナー大きさにに感動！日本にまだ入ってきてないオーガニック・ジーンズも発見！「これは買うでしょ！」と思い値段を見て、財布に相談するが、悲鳴をおこし購入できませんでした。
そんなしぶとい私はあきらめず、色々な商品をリサーチし、かっこいい無地の100％オーガニックTシャツを発見！24ドルちょっと高めだがリーズナブルだしハイ・クオリティーなので、2枚買いました。 まだ、日本には数枚しか発売されていません、近々日本にもLevi’s Ecoブランドが入ってくる事を願っています。
②パタゴニア
パタゴニア社はオーガニックTシャツに関しては長い歴史をもっています。パタゴニア・ブランドは環境意識が高く、１％の利益を環境へ寄付する有名ブランドですよね。
特に私が好きなのは、パタゴニアのT-シャツほとんどがオーガニック・コットンな事、選択しやすいし気持ちよく色々な物が買えるのがパタゴニアの長所だと思います。
昨年、エコプロで拝見できた帝人社とのコラボ。「キャプリ―ン・リサイクル・プロダクツ」など、積極的にサステナブル・ブランドとして活動しているパタゴニア、今後の動きが楽しみですね。
③アメリカン・アパレル
アメリカン・アパレルは今米国で若者に注目されているブランド。アメリカで急成長を起こしているブランドでもあります。その特徴とは若者をターゲットとしたミュージック・テーストを入れた無地でシンプルなテースト。私は勝手にこのブランドが日本でブームすると予測しているのだが、みなさんどうでしょう？

Fight off Aids

モトローラ・レッドの事ご存知ですか？
先日、友達が何気なく、新しい携帯に交換をしているのを気づき、
「これかっこいいね」と話しかけると、
「この電話、アフリカのエイズ・プログラムに寄付されるんだよ」
その日、ネットで調べてみると、
あの有名な「プロダクト・レッド」、U2のVocal,Steve Bonoを中心に資金を集めているブランドとコラボしている。
モトローラ・レッドの売り上げは女性、子供を重点的にサポートするアフリカのエイズ・プログラムに寄付されます。
アメリカのモトローラサイトを拝見すると、
プラトーンで有名になったチャーリー・シーンや、Xゲームで桁違いな活躍をみせるスノーボーダー／スケーターのショーン・ホワイトなど米国キッズが憧れる人々がコマーシャルでサポートもしている。
人を助ける事を身近にできる、日常的な行動が人助けにつながるというシステム。
すばらしいシステム。これこそ、まさにサステナブル・ネットワーク・サークルじゃないですか？
まさにかっこいい人がかっこいい事をすると、かっこよさが半端ないですよね！
米国で近々発売される、IPHONE。 この携帯にもこのようなサステナブル・フーチャーがあれば最高ですね！

Skater friend of mine recently exchanged his cell phone to Motorola Red. I asked him "Motorola is making cell phone in Japan?" And he said, "by purchasing this phone, I can become supporter of HIV/Aids program in Africa to fight off Aids".
"Wow....".
I looked at my cell phone, and I have been using it over 2 years. I was thinking about replacing it to new one. And I have found number one prospect, Motorola Red with very thin, with great function that you need!
I checked Motorola site, similar to Apple, their advertisement is very attractive. They use famous comedian like Chris Rock, well known moviestar Charlie Sheen, and amazing snowboarder Sean White.
This phone will attract many young generation in great ways, but soon there going to be tough opponent, IPHONE coming through. I wonder what sustainable feature Iphone will bring up.
If I am able to see some competition in sustainable matter, I have no arguments in current economy!

Pancake Moutain

「パンケーキ・マウンテン」と名乗るテレビ番組があると耳にしたとき、何が頭に浮かびますか？パンケーキの形した山での火曜サスペンス？ もしくは、パンケーキ大食い大会？オーガニック・パンケーキ会社？
米国ワシントンD.Cを拠点に子供向けに番組とし放送されている「パンケーキ・マウンテン」。
この番組には「ルーファス・リーキング」と名乗るパペットがインディーズ・バンドにインタビューをし、子供達が音楽に合わせ踊りながらライブ・パフォーマンスをしてもらうユニークな番組。
初めて拝見していただく方には、番組の方向性が理解しにくいが、なんとなく上手い具合にブレンドしてしまう番組。 音楽と教育を混ぜたパートもいくつかあり。 この番組の主のテーマは音楽通して教育し、楽しむ事を教育することが最大の目的である

サステナブルにとって重要な３つの言葉ですね。
PS:ラーラパルーザ・フェスで有名になった、日本女性バンド、少年ナイフも参加しますよ！いやーひさしぶりに見ました。

Imagine when you hear a TV program called “Pancake Mountains?”What can you imagine?
I had imagined that M. Stuart started new TV program due to long debt, where she teaches you how to make unique pancakes in simple method? Or, possibly pancake eating contest hosted by incredible hot dog eating champion Takeru Kobayashi?

Actually Pancake Mountain is children’s television show based in Washington D.C. The uniqueness about this TV program is that unique puppet character named “Rufus Leaking” interviews indie band as a guest(Ted Leo, The Evens, Arcade Fire, and Shonen knife (from Japan) and have full amped live performances while children dance to its music. This show also includes some education, but the main theme of this program is to have pure fun! The combination is very strange, but somehow it seems to have great blend all together. Its amust see program, and I will recommend your children to dance to great music and watch this program also!

Midnight Oil

「ミッドナイト・オイル」
忘れられないあの曲。音楽は思い出を語るといいますよね。
私は、渡米したばかりの頃、アメリカの音楽シーンに圧倒されました。80年代といえば、
音楽色がとても明るく、元気でもある時代だったからかもしれません。 音楽からさびしさを学び、勇気をもらい、元気になることも感動することも学びました。
1989年、「ミッドナイト・オイル」という衝撃的なバンドとめぐり合いました。
大きな月をバックに奇妙な動きをするボーカル、10歳の私に音楽のすばらしさを教えてくれた一つの極です。スキンヘッドのボーカル（ピーター・ギャレット）のソウルフルな叫びに、体が勝手に動いてしまうビート・アンド・リズム。 「ベッズ・アー・バーニング」という名曲が、私が愛用している、ITUNEラジオからタイムスリップをし、流れてきました。。。感動のあまり、すぐに中古レコード屋に探しに行き、購入。19年前に感動した曲と又再開できるすばらさしさに感謝。私は古い過去を思い出しながら、音楽を聴き始める。2，3回聴いた後、面白いことにきづく。 聞いていると、このバンド、環境問題、社会問題を細かく、語っているじゃないか！
ミッドナイト・オイルは19７0年から2002年まで活動をしていたオーストラリア出身のバンド。政治的能動主義でも有名である、核廃絶や土着の土地権利、民族集団の和解など多くの環境活動にも関わっている。1989年にはボーカルのピーター・ギャレットはオーストラリア環境保全基金の代表と選ばれる。ミッドナイト・オイルの有名な活動の一例は、ニューヨーク市にあるエクソン・モービル本社の前でプロテスト・コンサートを行ったこと。
Music has enormous power and delivers message in state of unforgettable beats. Music can act as historical bibliography of individual by tracking down your favorite songs.
In my early childhood, I have encountered to great music. Music has given me a magical tool to mellow out in Sunday Afternoon and ignite my spirit on nights with overflowing Chemistry homework that I had to do in College days.
I remember on the year 1989, "Midnight Oil” gave me that kind of positive force..
One of their famous song "Beds are Burning" had greatest sound of all time. I used to dance to this music at age of 10. I had recorded them on my tape from the radio station, and would listen to it many times.
About two years ago, I was listening to the radio and Midnight Oil came on. And I realized the beat, and once again like childhood days, the riff would never get out of my head. So, I went to the record store (midnight oil is not available in Itune Japan) and purchased the album.
I would listen to it many times....
And if you hear the lyrics closely, I found out what song actually meant.
What I like about this song is that when it reaches at end of the song, you will hear clock ticking. This song is giving us the sign that our time is almost up. We must face the fact that we are not living in sustainable matter and we must find the ways to solve environmental problems, we must “pay the rent”.

Midnight Oil is Australian band that was active through the 1970(earthday formed)to 2002. Their song focuses on political activism ranging from nuclear disarmament to indigenous land rights, reconciliation, and environmental issues. In 1989,vocal Peter Garrett was appointed as President of Australian Conservation Foundation. One of the famous act from Midnight Oil was playing front of Exxon Head-quarters in New York. They played the protested over Exxon Valdez oil spill, with banner reading “midnight oil makes you dance, Exxon Oil makes you sick”. Peter Garrett left the band in 2002 to focus on his political career.

baggage from here to there

新しいバッグがほしい。。。
多くの海外、国内アウトドアブランドが出てきていますねー、どれを買っていいのか分からない。もしくは、高すぎて買うのが「もったいない」と思う人が多いと思います。 最終的には過去に買ったクオリティの低いリュックブランドを選び、あまり新鮮感を味わうことができないく、つまらない。。。。
バッグを買うとき、皆様はなにを重視して購入しますか？
私は：
1．心地よさ、機能（ポケット、空間など）
2．ルックス
3．耐久力
4．値段
私はこの4つのポイントを重視にバッグを購入しています。他の人はこのポイントの中に「流行」も重く重視されると思います。しかし私は「流行物や流行ブランド」にはあまり興味がありませんので。。。「俺流」なんでしょう。。。子供ですみません。
今後、バッグを買うとき、この４つの中に「サステナブル」という新しいジャンルを入れてみるのはどうでしょう？「え？どうやって？」、
それは「元」という言葉を頭にいれとけばオッケーです。
まず、二つのブランドを紹介いたします。 スイスブランドのバッグ、そしてカリフォルニア州サンタ・クルーズ市を拠点としたバッグ・メーカー。

Thinking about buying new back pack for new school year?
Sometimes it is really hard to determine, which outdoor brand has the right technology for you.
There are so many brand out there in outdoor retail store,, and you just do not have choice but buy the same old brand that you bought in the past.
When it becomes to buying backpacks, messenger bags, waistbag, hiking bag, and many other bag you can think of, I look for:
1. Comfort,Technology: pockets, space, etc.
2. Appearance
3. Toughness: waterproof, durability
4. Price
These 4 performances are the “prime necessity” today. And I think we are missing the fifth performance. How about putting “sustainable” in fifth spot?
How can bag be sustainable??
I would imagine bag has to be made from natural resources or recycled products. To make sure they are free carbon products. Many of you may think, “if bag is recycled, it lacks performance and if if bag is made from organic resources, price is outrageous”.
Let me introduce you to two pioneer bag manufacturers that have right tools to change the industry. One from Swiss and one from Santa Cruz California!
1.Freitag ~Freeway bag full of recycled materials

I saw Freitag bag about 3 years ago, when my friend was carrying them in University of Colorado campus. I asked him “why is your messenger bag so shiny?”, replied that his bag is made out from truck cover. And I said “whaaaaat?”
And I discovered Freitag consisted full of recycled parts.

It’s been three years since I have discovered Freitag. I have purchased their monotone messenger bag and colorful wallet about two years ago, and I use them everyday without any defects and plus they are waterproof. In Japan, Freitag became so popular to young kids. Freitag is on every fashion magazine and attracted young fashionable consumers. What so great about Freitag. For me :
1. sustainable
2. you can create your own bag! (F-cut)
But, I always wonder if half of Freitag Purchaser know about recycled technology? I wonder if consumers are purchasing Freitag in sustainable manner or fashionable trend? If one has no knowledge about it and value recycled bag equitable to brand new ones, its not a bad thing!
１．フレイタグ～フリー・ウェイバッグ
フレイタグとであったのは3年前、大学の友達がキャンパスで愛用していたバッグ。私は最初みたとき、「なんで、そのメッセンジャー・バッグ光っているの？」友達がクスクスと笑いながら、「これはトラックのカバーの生地だからだよ」。「えー！」と叫びました。
その後友達は、そのバッグのパーツを説明し始めました。
・ベースの生地は必要なくなったトラックカバー
・周りをピン止めしているのが、必要なくなったバイク・チューブ
・バッグ・ストラップはリサイクルされた車のシートベルトを使用している
「これはおもしろいし！かなりサステナブル！」ただ、値段は少し高い。貧乏大学生活をしていた私、色々な節約方法に工夫を重ね、フレイタッグのメッセンジャーバッグと財布を購入しました（もちろん値切りました（笑））。 フレイタグを使用し、2年以上経ちますが何も故障なく愛用させていただいています。
実際、フレイタッグ・ユーザーの中、フレイタッグのリサイクル技術の事を理解している人は多いのでしょうか？もし、消費者達がその技術、商品自体リサイクルプロダクト製品を新品製品の区別出来ない事はいい事なのかもしれませんね。

皆様、 「グリーン・クレヨン」にようこそ！
最初に私の自己紹介から始めましょう！
私、細島史郎と申します。1978年3月に茨城県古河市に生まれました。 自然が多い中、古河市でのびのびと育ちました。

First of all, I like to give little introduction about myself:
My name is Shiro Hosojima, born in March of 1978 in a rural city called Koga, Ibaraki ( located about hour and half train ride from Tokyo). In my early days, I was able to touch, see, feel, and play with nature at natural state.
私が9歳の時、父の仕事の都合により、米国に移りました。
最初の1年は田舎のオハイオ州、そして小、中、高校と音楽とビーチライフに囲まれながらサンディエゴ、カルフォルニア州でのびのびスローに育ちました。
海と遊ぶ楽しさから、「山の中でも遊びたい」という気持ちが多くなり、「広い海から、高い山へ」をテーマに高校を卒業した後、ロッキー山脈に囲まれたユタ大学ソルトレーク校に通う事になりました。2001年には経済学部を卒業しました。その後、日本に帰国し、アルバイトをしながら旅をしました。
当時、社会人になるより、まだ勉強する願望が多くあり、「環境学の魅力」との出会いをきっかけに2003年にコロラド大学ボルダー校に入学し、2年間で環境学部を2005年に卒業をしました。
Then, due to my father's business, our family moved to United States of America. From Findlay, Ohio to San Diego California, I was able to get in touch with many beautiful people and educate myself to live in culturally different environment.
In college years, I relocated myself to the mountains for desires to move out from open oceans to high moutains. With great outdoor activities surrounded by Rocky Mountains, I was able to attain BS economics degree from University of Utah in Salt Lake City and BA environmental policy degree from University of Colorado in Boulder.

米国に人生半分以上移住していた上、日本の環境関連の情報やサステナブル・ビジネスの知識を得ることを目標し、日本に帰国することを決めました。 日本に帰国し、多くのすばらしい人と出会い、現在、エコネットワークスのスタッフとして活動中です。 サステナブル社会を目指し、一人ひとりの価値観が活かせる最高の社会をめざし、毎日チャレンジをしております。
一人ひとりのサステナビリティとはユニークであり、意味にちがいがあると思います。

After graduating from college, I have decided to come back to Japan and work in th field sustainability business. Everyday is a challenge, and to me challenge must be challenged naturally.
I have desire to live in most "natural state" in my life. The definition of natural may taken differently from each individual. And I believe that if each individual live to their most natural state, sustainable pathway will direct us in most suitable way.
