www.flickr.com/groups/1244929@N21/
Event Overview of the “Disconnected World” Photo Campaign
AMITA Corporation is inviting photograph submissions from around the world during the period from October 1 to November 30, 2009, for the “Disconnected World” photograph Campaign. AMITA, a leading environmental business company headquartered in Tokyo with the mission to “realize a sustainable society,” is presenting the “Disconnected World” Campaign as part of its “Future Design Project” (provisional title) that included last year’s “Cool the Earth” Idea Contest.

The “Disconnected World” campaign is seeking submissions of photographs depicting how the relationship between people and nature is being lost, such as the earth on the brink of crisis due to global warming, endangered animal or plant species because of human development, or rivers contaminated by waste products, and photographs depicting how the relationship among people is being lost, such as wars with no end in sight, or land mines continuing to hurt innocent victims.

Use of the Photographic Images
・Photographs judged as outstanding images of the contest themes will be included in slide shows presented on the Internet and at events across Japan attended by social entrepreneurs, citizen funds in action, and others taking action to resolve social issues.
・The images will also be sent to people taking action and researching social issues in 192 countries and to 7,000 people across Japan working the environment, waste management, and CSR fields.
・All images will be viewable on the Internet for three years.

Submission Period
October 1 to midnight (Japan time) on November 30, 2009

Submission Method
Please submit photographs related to the themes outlined below along with a 60-word description with each photograph to the flickr image sharing website.

Step 1　Set up or use an existing flickr account.
Step 2　Upload the photographic image to your flickr account and input a description. (Limit of 3 submissions per person. Please limit descriptions to 60 words.)
Step 3　Access the contest group site at www.flickr.com/groups/1244929@N21/ , verify your agreement with the submission rules, and join the contest group.
Step 4　Submit the photographic image uploaded to your account in Step 2 to the group site.
Step 5　Contest administrators will approve the photographic image for inclusion in the flickr group and enter the photograph in the contest.

Contest Themes
・ Photographs depicting a breakdown in the relationship between nature and people
・ Photographs depicting a breakdown in the relationship among people
・ Photographs depicting a breakdown in the relationship between society and people

Example Submissions (Fictitious photos and explanations)

Title: A Neglected Forest Plantation
Description: Japan is 67% woodland, yet a growing amount of our forests are being neglected because there are fewer people taking care of them. I hope we can find a way to protect our forests before we lose the ability to supply wood materials, maintain watershed conservation, and receive the many benefits forests provide.

Title: Road Expansion for the Beijing Olympics
Description: This is a photo of a road being widened in preparation for the Beijing Olympics. The construction project became a major issue and included forced displacement of local residents that lived in the path of the road and people who poisoned themselves to death to protest the construction.

Eligibility
Eligibility is open to anyone taking action to solve the issues of our world, including the central players, activists, journalists, NGO/NPO staff, researchers, etc.

Sponsors
Sponsor: AMITA Corporation
Cooperating Partner: EcoNetworks Co.

AMITA Corporation
AMITA launched one of Japan’s first recycling operations in the 1970s with the handling of “products” (AMITA views industrial waste as an unused resource and calls it a “product”) and has since grown into a leading company in the environmental field in Japan through such diverse and unique operations as introducing the Forest Stewardship Council certification system to Japan to provide accreditation for responsible forest management practices (1999), launching a consulting business specializing in environmental business (2005), and conducting a recycling operation employing grazing cattle to help revitalize neglected woodland (2007).

At a young age, AMITA Corporation President Eisuke Kumano saw a picture of a child inflicted with Minamata disease and immediately resolved to create a company that would help conserve and improve the environment. It is his hope that the photographs gathered in this contest will strengthen, encourage and inspire in people a strong will to work for a better future.

1. Define sustainability in few words.

Harmony between human activities and this planet Earth that sustains us.

2. Who is your inspiration?

David Brower (1912-2000, a visionary environmentalist), David Suzuki (an articulate scientist passionate about our planet), Junko Edahiro (a person who believes anything is possible, and makes it so), and all the children of the world (for whom nothing is impossible).

3. Favorite food?

Green tea icecream.

4. Why are you working for EcoNetworks?

Because this organization thinks outside the box and seeks ways to make positive contributions for a sustainable world.

5. Love Animals?

Our dog Shu, is almost human and a full member of the family. African bush babies also deserve special mention.

6. Who are you? Please define yourself?

If there's a problem, I feel the urge to create a team of people and get to work on it! I want to hear everyone's ideas! When I work, I work, but when I have time off, I like to truly R-E-L-A-X!

7. Favorite word?

"Let's do it together!"

8. Favorite movie or documentary?

Slumdog Millionaire (uplifting), Inconvenient Truth (essential viewing).

9. Favorite books?

"Plan 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization" (Lester Brown).

10. Interest?

I believe that creating art or music is one of the highest human pursuits. Just started learning to play violin. On the more serious side, I'm interested in sustainability, human communications, connecting with nature, and the links between Earth and human history.
